A Blind Man at 78, Bowls a 300!

Bowling TechniqueDale Davis, a World War II veteran with his 115 pound frame, did it during the All-League Playoffs at Century Lanes in Alta, Iowa. He started as a pin-setter earning 45 cents per day, and now has over 65 years of bowling experience.

Nick named “Hammer”, Dale has a 188 average. He can see a little peripheral vision, very close up. He needs help describing what pins are left, because he can’t see them. But, he can see the dots on the approach, to line up with. Dale has adjusted to bowling with the help of his friends, and developed his very own winning bowling technique!

With his neatly combed back hair and 115-pound frame, Davis is proud of the fact he still uses the heaviest ball available, explaining that he and his ball “weigh over 130 pounds together.”

His first introduction to bowling was as a pin-setter in his early teens, making roughly 45 cents per night. Since that time, the former truck driver and carpenter has amassed over 65 years of experience with the sport. As he grew up, Davis’ bowling skills flourished and he began to play in leagues and tournaments. He even won an event in California to take home $2,500 after his days served with the Navy.

In 1996, Davis lost all vision in his left eye. He believes heavy smoking and his previous lifestyle were perhaps factors in the loss. A year later, the sight in his right eye began to blur and eventually darkened as well.

How to Grip Your Bowling Ball?

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 @ 11:03 AM

Your grip on a bowling ball will make a difference on the release you have. By grabbing the bowling ball like a baseball or softball, will cause a late release or pull to the left. This is due to holding on the bowling ball, so tightly with your fingers.

Ideally, you want to put pressure or squeeze, with the base of your thumb in the thumb hole.  In this case, as you lift the bowling ball to roll at your mark, the bowling ball will slide off your fingers and your hand smoothly. This bowling technique will improve your accuracy, and cut down on the bowling ball’s weight, pulling your hand to the left. Also, the bowling ball revolutions should likewise improve. Remember, release the bowling ball smoothly, take your time up to the line, and don’t force the ball. Good luck and enjoy yourself.

Wii bowling is sweeping the world. Senior citizens are Wii bowling in nursing homes and retirement villages. Wii tournaments are sprouting up all over too. Rehabilitation Clinics uses Wii bowling and other Wii software for therapy exercises. Kids are playing against their parents and grandparents. Wii has opened up more exercise by gaming. Even seniors who walk away frustrated after their first game, will return later in the day, to better their score? How addicting can Wii bowling get, more than solitaire  once was on the PC?

How about catching criminals? Well, near Tampa, Florida, drug investigators walk in on Wii bowling  suspects without detection? While gathering flat screen TVs, methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, weapons and more than $30,000 in stolen property, the investigators ran off a few Wii bowling games themselves. A couple investigators didn’t want to leave the scene, because they were on a string of strikes?

Why Do I Drop the Bowling Ball?

Friday, March 26, 2010 @ 11:03 AM

If your dropping the bowling ball, the problem is usually your thumb hole. The thumb hole is too big to grip or drilled at the wrong angle. If too big, use bowling finger tape, as mentioned in the previous blog. If drilled wrong, then the thumb hole has to be opened up, or filled and re-drilled. If the bowling ball is too heavy, this can cause the problem too.

One other bowling tip on this subject is, if you are using a hand-me-down or used bowling ball, the bowling ball wasn’t drilled correctly for you, so it doesn’t fit right. The best way is to check out your finger hole pattern with your bowling alley or a bowling pro shop. So, when drilled properly, your grip will be perfect, which should give you more accuracy and increase scoring. Just remember, the right custom bowling ball makes all the difference, but the right fit makes it work! Have fun bowling!

Your Bowling Manners Count.

How many times you see someone hitting the ball return, yelling after a bad shot, or jumping ahead of another bowler on to the approach. Remember bowling isn’t golf, but bowling does have accepted bowling manners. By disturbing other bowlers with your antics, you will make enemies, or at least, not friends. One bowler yells after a bad shot. Many bowlers will not bowl, while he is on the approach, because it disrupts their delivery. Another bowler runs down the approach, past a bowler starting his approach. Finally, hitting the ball return after a bad shot, will not change the score?

Let the bowler on your left or right, if they are ready, bowl first. This will add good will to your fellow bowlers, but also give you more time, to remember the shot you want to make. The key is not rushing yourself, to make your shot. By taking your time, you can concentrate on a quality shot. Don’t disrupt your fellow bowlers, and they will in turn, show you the respect, you deserve!  Bowling tips not only help your Game, but your friendships too!

Bowling Shoes Sticking to the Lane?

Wednesday, March 24, 2010 @ 03:03 PM

When your bowling shoes stick to the bowling lane, usually you stepped into something, to be polite. If your bowling shoes are wet, use a dry towel, bowling shoe brush, a little Easy Slide, or/and slide your shoe on the approach. By sliding your shoe on the approach, especially after you think you have cleaned your shoes, you can check if the shoes are still sticking. If you do not have above bowling gear, ask at the bowling center counter, if you can use theirs.

This is a good habit to get into, before you start your approach, slide your landing shoe on the lane, just in case you stepped into water or a spilled drink. Your landing shoes is opposite your throwing arm, example left foot for the right handers.  Be aware of the floors in the restrooms, especially, and if you can, wear your bowling shoe protectors or covers anytime you leave your bowling area.   Keep it safe, and be prepare for the worst! Good Bowling!

Custom bowling balls are just that customized for you, with bowling ball reaction, and your hand pattern. Discount, and used bowling balls are cheap for kids and adults to use, but must be fitted properly. That is why, you should check out the drilling pattern to your hand, and figure the drilling or re-drilling cost into your total cost of the bowling ball. In this way, you will have your total cost of your bowling ball purchase.

The reason I mentioned this is, many bowling alleys and bowling pro shop include new bowling ball drilling for free. So, if you buy a used or discounted bowling ball without free drilling, a new bowling ball maybe cheaper, especially between February and June discounts that include free drilling. Good bowling, and I hope this helps in your bowling enjoyment!

Two Handed Bowling?

Monday, March 22, 2010 @ 10:03 AM

As seen on ESPN March 21, 2010, two handed bowlers may be the norm in the future? The bowling delivery seems very unusual now. Most of us haven’t seem that delivery style before. Basically, Jason only uses his middle two fingers in the bowling ball. His left hand cradles and guides the bowling ball. In this tournament, only 2 Professional Bowlers use the two handed delivery.

But according to some top bowling instructors, this bowling technique may become common in bowling instruction. These instructors think this bowling technique, may have merit with young bowlers. So who thought, the down under Australian Pro-bowler Jason Belmonte bowling technique, could change the future style of  bowling?

Dropping the Bowling Ball.

A friend of mine keeps dropping the bowling ball. He always looses it on the down swing before reaching the foul line. He tried bowling gloves and rosin powder with no help. Since he just started bowling, the Team thought it might be the way the bowling ball was drilled? Being very discussed with himself, he didn’t like answering any of our probing questions about his bowling. Finally, one of the guys got him to hold the bowling ball in his hand, to evaluate the hand span on the bowling ball.

Sure enough, we found out the bowling ball was a hand- me- down, cheap deal, and wasn’t drilled for him at all. The thumb was reversed drilled for easy release, which for him, was even harder to keep in his hand. So, he plugged the thumb set the hole further back for his hand span. Now, he is letting it fly, maybe too much? But he got his confidence back, and is improving every night with his custom bowling ball.

Bowling Shoes with Replacable Heels and Shoe Pads.

Dexter bowling shoes pioneered the concept many years ago,  and it is still going strong. Because the shoes last so long, the soles and heels can be replaced, so no need for repairs or shoe replacement. The easy replacements just stick on a Velcro shoe pad.

Bowlers can slide longer or shorter by just changing the heel and sole pad combination. A chart gives all the information on the various combinations. By changing the combination, bowlers can adjust to the type of delivery they want and change back again, as fast as tearing one pad off and sticking on another. Don’t you love technology, when it works?
