Keeping Your Balance in Bowling.
If you find yourself in the other bowlers lane, you are not balanced at the line, or the release point of your bowling ball. The reason you are in the other bowlers lane, is because your body is not under control.
One way to maintain you balance is to move your chest forward to a comfortable and more centrally balanced position over your legs. By leaning forward, the heaviest part of your upper body has a head start over your feet. I’m not making a joke here, even though that is funny. But curiously, once you have released your bowling ball, your body should be stable or like a statue, with just your release arm still swinging back. If you can master this image and perfect it, you will have control through your swing with leverage. Also your accuracy will improve, as well as your scores. I hope this bowling tip image, will help to develop your bowling game, and put the fun back into bowling?
Men’s Night Out, Bowling!
I don’t know about you guys? But every week, I look forward to bowling night! Just us guys together bowling, telling jokes, teasing each other, and laughing at life in general. It is the men’s night out, and out of reality for 3 to 4 hours. The friendships are priceless, and lasting. Bowlers you meet, you do business with at the dealerships, stores, shops, and offices. If you run into a problem, someone knows the person who can fix it for you. It is a local social network of information and advice that the internet can’t beat! Because you also receive evaluations on services these businesses provide, too. And boy, if you paid too much for something, they will tell you so. But then, ask you to talk to them first next time, before you buy.
This freedom of information holds true about bowling gear, such as bowling balls, bowling equipment adjustment, best place to have your bowling ball drilled, what bowling accessories to use, bowling tips and techniques to help your game, and which bowler has a 300 game going. Yes in many respects the bowling alley and bowling league is a hide away from reality, life, responsibility, and pressure. Man, I love throwing out that first ball! Let the men’s night out, begin!
Wild Custom Bowling Shirt.
What does your custom bowling shirt say about you and your team? You are average, and blend into the crowd? How can you see your team mates, if all the bowling teams are wearing plain gray, black, and maybe dark green bowling shirts? You can’t!
Well, is it about time people turn their heads, when your team walks into the bowling alley? A custom bowling shirt that can be recognized from a distance as a team mate, or your team colors? If your proud of your team and team mates, I would think so.
This year, it was my turn to pick out the team’s custom bowling shirt color. I picked gold! They laughed at me, and thought I was kidding. I said “No, not another team here has a brightly colored bowling shirt”. You can’t pick one team member from another team at a distance, or sometimes even close up. The teams all look the same, what is up with that? Don’t you want to stand out, and show that your team is unique? Well I got a lot of jokes about how bright my team’s shirts were. And my team joked too, at the start of the bowling season. But then we started to win and win and win game after game. The other teams just scratch their heads, how are these guy doing it? My team doesn’t know either. But this is the first time in the 10 years, all my team mates are wearing their bowling shirt every night! Of course it helps a little, when your in 1st place too?

Buying Used Cheap Bowling Balls?
This just happened to me last Monday night at the bowling alley. A new league bowler, was trying to sell a, only 30 games used, Storm Reign bowling ball cheap. Well the price of $80 was reasonable, since one was on display at the bowling alley for around $200. It was a 15# bowling ball which is just right for me, but the deep scratches looked like more than 30 games used? I measured my hand over the drilled finger holes, and with my semi-finger tip grip, it would be close with very little adjustments to the present configuration. But, I was still questioning the wear on the bowling ball? So, I asked some friends about it. They told me that another bowler, I know on Thursday night league had just sold the bowling ball. Both bowlers didn’t like the action, so they each wanted to sell it for cash, to use for another bowling ball. Well with my little knowledge about the custom bowling balls characteristics, I knew it had a strong back end. This is what I was missing for my first game. The first games on league is the oiliest, and my bowling ball Hammer-No Mercy tends to slide too much.
Now the plot thickens, three other bowlers are also interested, and they are all high rev. bowlers, I’m not. I am what they call a stroker, center of the approach second arrow with a slight curve or hook. Since the high rev. bowlers were interested, another red flag flew by. These guys roll a different type of ball than I do? Maybe I am over my head with this bowling balls characteristics? What if I buy it and I can’t handle it? Well I could add revs. if I tuck my little finger under the ball on release. I have used that bowling technique before. Then I could sand or roughen up the outer cover, so the ball would grip better using my lower revs? ( Bowling Tip: Only reactive, urethane bowling balls can be scared up, plastic bowling balls will be permanently damaged. Reactive and urethane bowling balls can be polished back to original cover condition. For an even sanding, use a ball spinner, or have a professional do it correctly.) The league is about over, he wants to sell now, because he wants the money, and the others are either short on money now, can’t decide, or are waiting for a lower price. This maybe a great opportunity or a waste of money?
I took the bowling ball and the risk of the other bowlers watching for my results? The following Thursday night, I came in early, after $30 bowling ball refit, to practice and see if it was a good deal or a bad deal? The bowling ball practiced great a old oiled lanes, and during practice warm ups. But when the league started, the bowling ball stopped driving through the pocket and left me with splits. Frustrated I went back to old reliable No Mercy and bowled great plus salvaging the series. Not wanting to admit defeat, I went to plan B, sanding the bowling ball. The sanding was done professionally, the Reign came back to life for me the following Monday night. I bowled a 190 with one split.
Was this a good deal or a bad deal? My costs $110 but my supplier just reduced new Reign to $115, plus drilling with free shipping. Well I saved drilling costs and $5 which can equal $45 to $75. The ball has potential, and I’m still learning about it. I think it will be the bowling ball that I needed, and wanted to buy anyway. So, I would say in this case, I lucked out, and made a Good Deal. My bowling friends are still skeptical, but they wanted to buy the ball too! Have fun bowling and I hope you can make a Good Deal too.
The Perfect Birthday Present
My daughter is celebrating her eighth birthday this week, and my wife and I have been at a loss as to what to give her. Admittedly, we spoil her throughout the year, and there are few things left on her list—besides the typical pony, castle, etc. Every Thursday night our family goes bowling, so we decided to get her something that relates to the game.
Every time we go to the lanes, she complains about the lack of small bowling balls and having to use the chipped models that are available. We were able to find a website that makes custom kids bowling balls, so we decided to get her one with her favorite cartoon character printed on it. Although her birthday doesn’t fall on a Thursday, we may have to make a special trip to the lanes to try out her gift.
Wii Going to Streaming Movies by Netflix.
Yes, order your installation disc now, for the Spring 2010 start up. According to my information, a simple monthly sign up is necessary online for the 26 million household Wii users. If you are a current member of Netflix just use your membership information at no extra charge. You can sign up at Netflix now, www.netflix.com/NRDInfo/Wii.
A high speed internet hook up is needed, and queue changes must still be made on your computer. You can select movies by category. Movie evaluations or ratings by current viewers can be made, which will be figured into another category. This will help future viewers to make informed choices. Sorry, HD will not be available as far as I heard, 17,000 Netflix movies are not in HD. SD video streaming will be used, which I read, gives a better quality picture than cable on demand movies? The XBox 360 and Sony PS3 can run 720P and 1080P videos. The Wii supports a 480P which may not look good on HDTV’s. So besides the picture quality, audio quality is in question too. But now, you don’t have to go to the mail box?
Oh by the way, Wii may be announcing lowering console prices to $150 in March at GDC, June at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or maybe at the Q1 Media Summit event this February 24 in San Francisco. Don’t you love competition? Wii bowling will be even more affordable! I wonder, if I can get a bowling channel for great bowling movies, and ESPN bowling tournament highlights?
Why Use A Wrist Support?
Using wrist supports,of course, helps to keep your wrist straight. But the wrist support, also helps in protecting your wrist from injuries. Since wrist supports stiffens your wrist, an added benefit would be, the increased leverage and speed. Now you can lift the bowling ball with your wrist, without your wrist breaking or flexing. When breaking your wrist, you lose the speed and leverage of your approach and release. Your bowling ball path will be longer and straighter to the pins. But now with more power through the pocket.
Wrist supports come in a variety of styles, from cloth to metal. The more expensive wrist supports will increase your balls revolutions, angle or hook, and give you an easier and more fluid release. The basic wrist supports just supports your wrist. This would be the level to start at. The more expensive wrist supports are tougher to adjust to, and to control at first, which can be very frustrating.
This bowling technique will enhance your game, if you progress a step at a time. Control is a major part, when learning about the more expensive wrist supports. A lot of hook can be dangerous, if not controlled. So keep it simple and less complicated. Enjoy the Game and don’t get hurt. Because you can bowl for years to come, please stay healthy to enjoy it. May the pins fall in your direction, Good Luck.
How to Throw a HOOK!
For beginner bowlers and kids learning to bowl, release the bowling ball like your going to shake someones hand is taught. That is alright as a style of release for beginners. See the only problem I have with that style of release is, the ball weight is between the thumb and index finger at the release point. Also, this style of release puts pressure on the other two fingers to lift the ball vertically after the thumb leaves the bowling ball. Maybe it’s only me, but I have a tendency to flip my wrist toward my body at the release point, unless I wear wrist support, of course. This causes the bowling ball to go left, for a right handed bowler. But I’m not knocking the style at all, because a lot of bowlers have had success with it. Do to the problems I was having with my fingers joints, I had to fine another way.
So, my bowling tip is a similar style, but different. To protect my wrist and fingers from the pressure of my back swing and release, I changed to this release style. Hold your hand with the bowling ball in the position of the thumb in front. As you release the bowling ball use your thumb as your gun sight to aim at your mark. Then lift your hand from under the bowling ball, thumb up and first out of the bowling ball. The other two fingers will follow from under the bowling ball into a hand shaking position. This style of release can be done with as little lift of 10 to 12 inches. The rotating action of the fingers from under the bowling ball gives the side revolutions causing the bowling ball to Hook. Because the bowling ball rests in the palm of your hand until release, your fingers have less pressure on them. And a side benefit, you use your thumb as a gun sight, which improves your accuracy. Only your wrist rotates from under the bowling ball to the side, in a hand shaking position.
This style may not be new to some of the experienced bowlers, but I thought, it would be helpful to the other bowlers. Thanks to this style of release, my bowling average is coming back, and at one time, I thought I would never see a 600 series again. Good Luck, and never give up the fight.
Custom Bowling Balls-What Difference?
Well, besides the one bowling ball curves or hooks more than the other? Is there really that much difference in bowling balls? Custom bowling balls have characteristics like you and me, we all have our good qualities. For example, I had a bowling ball that was out of control. Just could not get a handle on it. Sold it to a friend just learning the Game, because he liked the hook? His style of bowling was more straight up power than mine, and he did very well with the ball?
So, some bowling balls are great on oily lanes, medium to heavy oiled lanes, and dry lanes. Some bowlers carry the first two bowling balls for strike balls, and the last for corner spares like 7 and 10 pins. The oily lane bowling ball, may or may not be used at the start, depending on the amount of oil on the lanes. The medium to heavy oiled lanes bowling ball, will get most of the work. Finally, the dry lane bowling ball will only be used for 7 and 10 pin spares, or if the lanes get dry, as a strike ball, for example.
But there is even a finer difference between bowling balls, as I mentioned about my friend’s success, the individual bowler’s style factor. Any given bowling ball will work differently for each bowler. For example, I have two bowling balls that will hit the pocket consistently and pick up spares. One averages 160 to 175, the other 190 to 215, which bowling ball would you use? So, don’t be afraid to try an old, or historically unsuccessful bowling ball, if you fall in to a scoring slump. Because, one of your old bowling balls may be made of gold!
Do You Have Happy Feet?
Happy feet, fast feet, fast approach, quick delivery, or rushing the line, which ever term you like. But, if your at the line to deliver the bowling ball, and the bowling ball isn’t, you have too fast a delivery problem.
The bowling tip to solve it, is to count. Yea, I know that sounds silly. But think, if you say to yourself, one, two, three, four, or five, on each step you take on your approach. You will have to slow down, unless you are a very fast counter that runs the words together. The biggest reason we all rush the line, is because we know what we want to do, and can’t wait to get that strike. Do you ever see a bowler run up to the line for a spare? No not usually, because they know how important it is, to hit your mark for that spare. So, you take your time and make a good shot. The same is true for a strike. Speed isn’t the answer, but accuracy is. Slow down and watch your scores improve. Have fun bowling, and make each ball count!
