Bowling Technique: Revive An Old Bowling Ball.
The bowling season is about to start, and this bowling technique can help you when looking over your bowling ball arsenal. The decision is, which ones to use or replace? Now other than the initially drilling of your bowling ball to your needs, little can be done to change the bowling ball’s reaction, right? Well, not exactly. So lets try to summarize the available options, before buying a new bowling ball.
First bowling technique, has your bowling ball been resurfaced or reconditioned lately, like every 60-90 games is recommend? If not check out this post, Recondition A Bowling Ball. Basically, your custom bowling ball is burned out and needs a good restoration.
Second bowling technique, if your bowling ball just isn’t biting the lanes as before, perhaps a good cleaning is needed to get the dirt and oil out of the cover stock. You may also consider this post too, Washing Your Bowling Ball?
Third bowling technique, lets go back to this post, Why Sand A Bowling Ball? If you are resurfacing the bowling ball, you just ask to leave it sand. Of course the opposite is true, if your custom bowling ball is breaking too much, put it into the bowling ball polishing machine, or use a high gross cleaner.
Finally if none of these bowling techniques are helping, may be it is time for a new bowling ball. Now you have to decide, if you want a dry, medium to heavy, or heavy oil bowling ball, and how aggressive you want the bowling ball’s reaction to be? Remember, each bowling ball should be used for a certain reason, otherwise all your bowling balls would react the same with no advantage of one over the other. Keeping a variety of reactions for the changing lane conditions, is the advantage of your custom bowling ball arsenal.

Bowling Technique: How Can I Release Consistently?
This bowling technique is a must for consistent scores. Think about it. If your bowling ball release is different, your bowling ball will react different, so how do you adjust to the changing lane conditions, if your release is changing too?
First bowling technique is keep the same approach what ever it is. If one time you stand up and the next time you crouch down, that is two different approaches and releases. Find an approach you are comfortable with and keep it, unless the wheels come off your Game, and you think it must be the approach. Once you have established a consistent approach half the battle is over. Along with your approach, your arm swing should fall in line next to your side. As I pointed out before, your arm swing next to your side will give you the best leverage and lift on your bowling ball release.
Second bowling technique is, control your wrist for a consistent release, not just for one Game, but for all your Games. If you have a problem because your wrist isn’t strong enough, then use a wrist support. Another bowling technique is, if you need to use a wrist support, don’t start without it and then put it on later. Why, because when you use your wrist support, you will have to make an adjustment after bowling without it. So when using a wrist support, start off with the wrist support at the very beginning, or the first Game. Then, you don’t have to make any adjustments later, when changing over to your wrist support.
Finally, the bowling technique summary is to keep the same approach and release for consistent scoring. Also by using a consistent approach and release, now you can adjust to the bowling lanes much easier with better results. So look at your Game, analyze your approach and your release, if you are inconsistent, then make the corrections. The corrections you make, will greatly affect your Game, and gives you a strong base for your future Games.
Bowling Technique: How to Throw a Straight Ball?
Lately, I have been receiving questions about, the bowling technique to throw a straight ball. This is a very important bowling technique, especially for corner pin spares. But, it isn’t as easy as many bowlers would think. Notice Professional Bowler Sean Rash’s release, I believe he is going for a 10 pin. But, how can I tell? Can you tell by this picture?
Lets start off with the bowling ball, and what you want to do with it? If you are using a plastic bowling ball, the bowling ball has low lane resistance and easy to control. Your release isn’t as critical, because of the low lane resistance.
Now the bowling technique if you are using your strike ball, which is usually a reactive resin type bowling ball, the control will be more complicated. Mainly because your strike ball usually curves or hooks, with your release lift. But even without lift, depending on how aggressively your bowling ball is drilled, will still have a curve or flipping motion. This is because of the bowling ball’s weight block. For example, your right handed and you want to pick up the 10 pin, how many times has the bowling ball curved to the left, just before hitting the 10 pin?
The bowling technique is keeping your thumb up at 12 o’clock or straight up. Don’t lift the bowling ball, just let your hand stop at the bottom of your arm swing. The third bowling technique point to remember, especially with a aggressive strike ball, is to break your wrist. No not physically, but relax your wrist, so you will not add any lift to the bowling ball. Of course, practice will give you your own comfortable style of release, and mark locations to use. The main trick is to control the lift or curve of your bowling ball. This is why many bowlers use a plastic bowling ball, which I found out, can be over powered and keeps sliding into the gutter.
Another way to pick up 10 pins, or 7 pins for lefties, is the backup ball. Instead of keeping your thumb up, flip your hand to the right, and rotate your thumb to the 1 or 2 o’clock location. For left handed bowlers, it would be 11 or 10 o’clock. This will cause the bowling ball to rotate to the right into the 10 pin. Then again practice, practice, practice will be needed to master the backup ball speed and mark location.
For right handed bowlers that use a straight ball for your strike ball, move more to your right for added angle to the pocket. Of course left handed bowlers just flip it, and go more to your left.
No matter what type of bowling style you have, practice will give you the confidence and natural release you need to be consistent. Remember to be yourself and develop your own bowling style. It’s not a one style fits all, as many experts want you to believe. It’s your Game, play it your way!
Bowling Technique: What Happens If I Hurt My Bowling Hand?
Over the years, the bowling technique adjustments have become as unique, as the bowlers who wouldn’t give up the Game. This is because they love the Game, and want to over come any bowling limitations to continue playing. So, for those creative bowlers, here are a few examples.
The first bowling technique if you injured your bowling hand is, of course, switch hands. For example, a bowler on our league had a car accident and injured is left bowling hand. Now we are talking about a over 200 average bowler. He practiced and practiced, not very good at first, but over a 2 to 3 year span, he got his 200 average back, right handed. Now for this to occur, the bowling balls have to be drilled for the other hand, and bowling shoes changed.
Next bowling technique is adding figure holes to your bowling ball. For the reason, your individual fingers aren’t strong enough. Now bowlers with arthritis, the fingers joints hurt, so the fingers are rotated to the fingers that didn’t hurt. This bowling ball had 4 to 5 holes with the thumb. Other bowling balls have a handle that comes out to hold on to, then hides back into the bowling ball after release. Another bowling ball has a thumb hole and a “smile” or slit for all the fingers hold on to. So you can see, where there is a will, a bowler will find a way.
Now the bowling technique for handicapped bowlers is like a sliding board at the playground. The bowler wheels up to the back of the 2 rail ramp, and lets the bowling ball roll down to the lane, like sliding down a slide. Of course, the bowling ball wouldn’t have any spin to it, but the slide is movable for aiming at the pins. Even wheel chair bowlers that have a strong upper body, bowl from the wheel chair off the approach, without any assistance or bowling aid.
Then again, bowling is flexible and adaptable Game for all ages and physical limitations. Your bowling technique may be different, but it still gets the job done, and that’s all that counts. Enjoy bowling, and ask questions about any difficulties you may have, someone will find the answers for you. Just because, we all love the Game that much.
Bowling Technique: Tracers Marks?
This bowling technique is about new marks that are being added to bowling lanes. Tracers are so new, I can’t find a diagram? I believe, they should be around the end of “Breakpoint”, pictured above. Ours lanes just received the tracer marks, and other bowling alleys may not have, yet. But if you watch the PBA Tour, you may have seen 4 sets of marks spaced across the lane before the bowling pins. These tracer marks will give you an idea of how well your bowling ball is working down the lane, especially just before hooking into the pocket.
This bowling technique is a new range finder marking system, you can use for your bowling ball finishing calculations. Say for example, your bowling ball flips or hooks a certain distance from the pocket. By using your marks, dots and arrows, you can now determine if your bowling ball is tracking wide enough from the pocket before it hits the pins. Here is how it works. After you release your bowling ball, you can follow your shot all the way down to these tracers. By watching your ball reaction far down the lane and just before pocket entry, you can adjust your marks to the tracers, so your bowling ball reacts at the right spot before the pocket. For example, there are two tracers on each side of center. If you are right handed, you can gauge if your bowling ball rolled over the correct tracer for shot, say the second one from the right. The angle can be corrected from your marks if your bowling ball went left or right of your spot at the tracer mark. If you need to go further right, you can move your feet more to the left and use the same arrow. Giving you a further right shot to hit your tracer spot. The opposite is true if your ball is too far right, just move your feet more to the right. By hitting the same arrow or board mark your bowling ball should go more left, and hopefully over your intended tracer mark. So the tracers work like a second arrow further down the lane.
The bowling technique is new, but gives a idea of your bowling balls reaction as the lanes change. Adjusting to the left or right will depend on your type of ball reaction. But now you can gauge your bowling ball’s location, just before it turns into the pocket. It’s like using a long rifle compared to a short pistol, your accuracy will improve, because you are now using marks way down the lane too. Don’t be frustrated by your adjustments, because as the game progresses your marks will too. Now you will know where your bowling ball should be before it hits the pocket. Good luck and give the tracers a try.
Bowling Technique: How to Bowl on Heavy Oiled Lanes?
Heavy oiled lanes require a different bowling technique, than on normally oiled lanes. First of all, the heavy oil lanes causes the bowling ball to slide more from the increased oil. The easiest answer to this is, get a heavy oil type bowling ball. The heavy oil bowling ball will grip more into the oil, for the needed traction on the lanes. These bowling balls are designed, for just this kind of bowling surface. Now there are reactive resin and particle bowling balls for heavy oil. The main difference with a heavy oil reactive resin bowling ball is, that it absorbs the oil to gain traction. This will cause problems later, because this high absorption rate means oil build up in the bowling ball’s cover. The oil will have to be removed by cleaners, so the absorption rate can be kept up for the bowling ball’s traction. A bowling ball filled with oil will just stop, or greatly lose it oily advantage. Where as the particle bowling ball has small particles in the cover, to dig into the oily lanes surface. It’s like having snow tire studs on your bowling ball. Particle bowling balls are very good on heavy oil lanes. The only problem is, if you don’t bowl that often on oily lanes, the purchase won’t be worth it. Unless you have the money, and need a heavy oil bowling ball for future bowling tournaments or for other bowling alleys, just in case? Also remember, heavy oil bowling balls will hook a lot more on less oily lanes. So as the lanes dry out, you will have a control problem. Keep your next bowling ball handy, to handle the medium oil lanes. In most cases that will be your regular bowling ball.
Bowling technique #2 is a compromise, instead of a heavy oil bowling ball, use a medium to heavy oil bowling ball. This is a good bowling ball for oilier first games only, and an occasional heavy oil games. It will also give you a longer lane usage option, as the lanes dry down.
Bowling technique #3, is sand one of your reactive resin or urethane bowling balls for just oilier lanes. In most houses, or bowling alleys the first game is the oiliest. The reason for sanding is, to add traction to the bowling ball. Sanding is like treads on a tire, so the oil can be channeled. A polished bowling ball, unless designed for oily lanes, has a smooth surface so it slides more. But there is more to this bowling technique, although sanded, the bowling ball will still need help. This help is in speed. Slow down your speed, so the bowling ball can grab on to the oily lanes. If using a sanded bowling ball for oily lanes, be sure to keep the bowling ball clean as usual, but re-sand, if the sanded tracks fill in or smooth out.
The bowling technique #4 is, if you don’t have a heavy oil, medium to heavy oil, or sanded bowling ball, use your regular bowling ball on a diagonal shot. If you are right handed, stand further right, and slow down your speed to the pocket. With the angle and the slower speed, your bowling ball will wade through the oil, until it dries out or burns out. Of course, this is the weakest bowling technique for heavy oil lanes, but the only one left. So after the lanes dry out, then go back to your usual shot.
A final bowling technique is clean your bowling ball after bowling, or before your next bowling session. This will insure your bowling ball’s best performance. By keeping yourself prepared mentally and your bowling gear, you will not be surprised by the bowling lane changes. The only lost bowler, is the bowler who wasn’t prepared! Don’t be that bowler, O.K.?
Bowling Tip: Dirty Bowling Tricks?
Dirty tricks are apart of every game, basketball, baseball, football, soccer, hockey, and as this bowling tip points out, our sport as well. These bowling techniques or tricks are not illegal, but they can throw off your Game. The main theory is, “If you can’t beat them, destroy them”. Sounds like politics? But, it’s used in other arenas too, more than you think.
For example, your shot is the best of any bowler during this game. What a more experienced bowler can do is, try to copy it. If your bowling outside, he will try it, too. I even had a bowler try it with an over active bowling ball. After one shot, he walked back to his locker to find a similar bowling ball as mine, so to copy my shot. With the second bowling ball, he was close in ball reaction. But the bowling tip is, we were both using the same line, the “line burn out” was much faster, and only lasted a little over one game.
The next bowling tip is “Line cross overs” which can be a problem, too. Say you are bowling a pretty straight line, other bowlers will cross over your line and mess up your oil pattern. This is normal with the variety of bowlers hooking the bowling ball, and is seldom intentional. But, sometimes you wonder? The experienced bowler, who can’t match your success, will try to destroy your line pattern. This bowling tip dirty trick can be done by bowling inside the other bowlers line, so to push the oil back over into the other bowler’s line. Sometimes crossing over or running along side the other bowlers line. This will cause the ball to slide more with the increased oil, and break later to the pocket. Now, the bowler has to find a new line, which is the results of this bowling tip dirty trick. This bowling tip can especially be effective, when bowling a cranker, with a shot from the left side across the middle and back into the pocket. Another bowler can use an inside shot with a similar line pattern, to push the oil out into the bowlers line.
But over 3 or more games, the oil patterns, due to wear, will shift back and forth. It’s not unusual after 2 or 3 games to go back to your original line pattern, because the oil has shifted back again. The bowling tip is, the bowler is not “locked in” to a pattern now, so the bowler is searching again for a new line. The main reason for this bowling tip of dirty tricks is, to keep the other bowler guessing where to line up at, and off balance. Needless to say, the bowling tip trick is to keep the other bowler confused, while you keep most of your Game. Sometimes you wonder why your highest average bowler, bowls bad against certain teams? Conspiracy theory?
Now that you know the dirty tricks bowling tip, you can use it to your advantage. Watch the other bowlers, the good ones are watching you. Use the same bowling tip tricks on them, just to make it even? Why do you think the experienced bowlers comment about you using their line? Some bowlers are very protective of their line pattern, because they are not comfortable with any other lines. Of course, if your good, you will catch the line pattern changing, before it totally breaks down. Play heads up! Know your capabilities and your equipment. Make your adjustment gradual at first, so you don’t over compensate. The main bowling tip is, treat the game as a chess match, between you and the lanes. The other bowlers are just giving you some clues on how to handle the lanes, use it to your advantage!
Reverse Thumb Hole Bowling Tip?
This bowling tip is, what is a reverse thumb hole and why do I need to know? If you are a bowler that doesn’t hold on the bowling ball, or have a fluid release, you may not need to know. But for the rest of us, that have a problem releasing the bowling ball, especially our thumb, this may come in handy.
The bowling tip of the reverse thumb hole is really a reverse pitch of the thumb hole. For example, if your bowling ball’s thumb hole is drilled straight up and down, and your thumb tightens on release, your bowling ball will catch on your thumb. Why, because by tightening your thumb, the thumb is larger than the thumb hole was drilled for. When the bowling ball is measured, the thumb is relaxed. Now the bowling tip to correct this: you could not tighten up your thumb on release, you can bevel out the thumb hole bigger, or the thumb hole can be drilled on more of an angle. The increased angle will make your release easier, but can make the bowling ball harder to hold to, especially on the back swing.
In an ideal world, only put pressure on the bottom or the base of your thumb, to hold the bowling ball. This bowling tip will also decrease thumb swelling, and give you a smoother release. If that doesn’t work try #2. Sand or bevel out the thumb hole by reenacting your thumbs release point. Take a look at what sides of the thumb hole needs to be widened. #3, when you have your bowling ball drilled, ask about a reverse pitch on your thumb. Of course once you have a bowling ball already drilled, to reverse pitch the thumb would mean to fill in the thumb hole and re-drill it. Besides being an extra expense, some pro shops may question the structural strength of the thumb hole. But then again, I have tried more risky drilling procedures. Even though, the bowling tip is, “Always check it out first with the pro shop”.
Now when a bowler finds a comfortable fit with a bowling ball, just copy the measurements to your next bowling ball. So when you are bowling, the change from one bowling ball to the next, will not make a change in your release motion. With this bowling tip, keeping the feel of your bowling balls the same, the Game is easier to analyze, even when you change equipment.
Who Is Your Bowling Buddy? | bowling tip
Of course in bowling tip, you need to find out who your bowling buddy is? Maybe you don’t know? It isn’t your best friend a lot of times. It may not be your teammates? It may not even be your friends? Well who is it then? It’s the person that can tell you straight to your face, what you are doing wrong and you believe it!
For me it is a stranger, a competitor, a lower average bowler, a better bowler, a bowler who I don’t get along with, or the man who drilled my bowling ball, watching me practice with it. The bowling tip is, it doesn’t matter! Here is a person that doesn’t have to say anything. But, because you need help, and they want you to succeed, is the only reason, they will volunteer this bowling tip to you. You know they are probably right, because of their honesty. So, what do you do with the bowling tip? Well this is what separates the good bowlers from the others, use it! Thank the person, which I had trouble with, and say, “I’ll try it”.
Granted not all advice is good advice, but how do you know, unless you try it? Especially, when you are struggling, and are a lost for reasons why? Many a time, my bad bowling habits creep back into my Game. I don’t even know it, until someone mentions it to me. Then the light bulb goes off in my head, I realize, that’s my problem! Bowlers record themselves bowling, for that very reason. But, we can’t see ourselves bowling during the game, so how can we catch our mistakes? Only, our buddies can!
Over Analyize Your Bowling Game? | bowling tip
Yes, I do this myself, that is why it’s a bowling tip. Try to make the perfect shot. Make the right adjustment. Over correct or under correct the next shot. And then, how does this mental game affect the outcome, the actual shot or the reality of your analysis?
Well I find, if I really concentrate, my approach slows down, because I tried to be too perfect. So, I do everything else right, but didn’t realize I did it in “slow mo” or slow motion? Then, if I didn’t catch my decreased speed on the score board, or a friend doesn’t tell you? I readjust again, thinking my bowling ball is hooking more than I anticipated. Now this really throws my Game into a tail spin, because I misdiagnosed my speed, causing the change in my ball reaction. Well, my brain is really messed up now. What do I do next? Well the rule of thumb and bowling tip for me is, “Don’t make an adjustment until you roll a good ball over your mark! Then and only then, you can analyze your shot!”
The bowling tip is keep everything in real time. Use your normal approach and ball speed, then use your adjustment, as best you can. So, you can better analyze how your bowling ball reacts to the adjustment. The key is to limit your adjustments to one at a time, if possible. In this way, you can weed out what is working, and what isn’t! If you make too many adjustments, and it doesn’t work? Which one of your new adjustments do you correct?
So the main bowling tip is, remember to limit your adjustments which makes it less complicated, and will probably be easier to do. Remember to keep your speed the same, unless your adjustment is to lower your speed, and hit your mark. Then and only then, you can use the ball reaction to reanalyze the results. Bowling is a simple game of adjustments, we make it more difficult!
